Zita is a four-piece New Orleans band that fuses classic rock, funk, and blues into what their official bio calls a throwback to the vibe of the 70s with a modern New Orleans flair. The band was founded in 2019: Michael Mullins on lead vocals, electric trombone, and rhythm guitar; Bradford Lewis II on lead guitar; Dylan Caillouet on bass; and Kai Melancon on drums.
Mullins fronts the band like the rock star he is, in WWOZ's words — a singer with a four-octave range who grew up on stage next to his trombone-hero dad, Mark Mullins of Bonerama. The band headlined Tipitina's in February 2020 and has worked the New Orleans club circuit and the greater Southeast since, releasing a self-titled debut EP in 2020 and the single "High Rise," their take on a twelve-bar blues.
The debut album Hardly Alive came in 2021 with standouts "The Picture" and "High Rise." The sophomore album Axiom followed in 2025, expanding into soul, funk, blues, psychedelia, and punk, with guest appearances by Nigel Hall (Lettuce), Mike Lemmler (George Porter Jr.), Steve Lands (The Black Keys, PJ Morton), and Mark Mullins. A new single, "Broken," is out now.
