New Orleans brass band Bonerama have spent more than two decades doing something that should probably be impossible — making trombone the lead instrument of a hard-driving rock and funk band — and making it work so well that audiences from Jazz Fest to rock clubs around the country have become true believers.
Biography
Founded in 1998 by trombonists Mark Mullins and Craig Klein, Bonerama emerged from the New Orleans brass band tradition but immediately began pushing against its boundaries, incorporating rock guitar and heavy funk rhythms into a sound that put the trombone front and center in ways the instrument had never quite experienced. Their recordings and live performances have built a devoted following, and their willingness to take on unexpected material — including full albums of Led Zeppelin and rock covers — while maintaining the New Orleans groove has made them one of the most entertaining bands the city has produced.
