Tonya Boyd-Cannon

Mississippi-born, Louisiana-raised — Based in New Orleans

Tonya Boyd-Cannon sings like every show might be her last. The Mississippi-born, Louisiana-raised daughter of a preacher is a classically trained contralto — “almost identical to that of a countertenor” — who went from background singer for Jean Knight to a Top 20 finalist on NBC’s The Voice, and has been electrifying New Orleans stages ever since.

Why We Love Tonya Boyd-Cannon

Tonya Boyd-Cannon is the whole New Orleans story in one voice: church-raised, classically trained, steeped in soul, funk, jazz, and reggae, and utterly incapable of phoning it in. She took Elton John’s “Take Me to the Pilot” on national television, opened it with a few bars of church, and made four superstar coaches feel something. Offstage she’s a teacher, a mentor, and the woman who built the first combined male-and-female choir inside the Orleans Parish Prison. When she sings — with her own band, the Family, or alongside Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Orchestra — it feels less like a performance than a revival. New Orleans doesn’t just have her; it raised her, and she gives it all back.

A Voice That Won’t Sit Still

Tonya Boyd-Cannon was born in Mississippi and raised in Louisiana, the daughter of a preacher, and she has been singing since she was a child. Although most of her early training came from middle school and high school band directors, she is a classically trained vocalist with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Tougaloo College. Her first professional job in the music business was as a background vocalist for Jean Knight, the singer of the 1970s hit “Mr. Big Stuff.”

"Give me some church music in the beginning and let me usher myself into it."

Her career catapulted in 2015 when she appeared on Season 8 of NBC’s The Voice, joining coach Adam Levine’s team and finishing in the Top 20 — her gospel-rooted reinvention of Elton John’s “Take Me to the Pilot” won over Levine, Pharrell Williams, Christina Aguilera, and Blake Shelton alike. She had already won the 2010 Budweiser Battle for the Crown, which led to opening slots for Anthony Hamilton, KEM, and Jaheim. Since then she has performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and the Essence Music Festival — where she shared an impromptu onstage moment with Grammy winner Eve — and she tours with her band, the Family, while performing around the world with Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Orchestra.

Before the spotlight, Boyd-Cannon served as a sheriff’s deputy in the Orleans Parish Prison, where she created the first combined male-and-female mass choir in the facility’s history. In 2022 the Louisiana House of Representatives commended her with House Resolution 216 for her accomplished career as a recording artist. She is the executive director of the Rise My Child Foundation, holds a Master of Fine Arts from Tulane University, and conducts youth vocal workshops with the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. Her albums include Rise My Child (2006) and MUZIC Is Life (2015), which earned first-round Grammy consideration in ten categories, and she released her latest album, Clusters, at the Dew Drop Inn in 2025.
