Erica Falls was raised in New Orleans' 9th Ward, the youngest of eight children, in a household where her parents introduced her to Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, and Whitney Houston — a foundation she credits directly for her unique vintage sound. Her mother's own angelic soprano voice, filling their home, was as formative as any recording. Falls's professional career began in the 1990s performing covers on Bourbon Street with the group Nu Beginnings, which led to extensive work as a backing vocalist and session singer for major artists including Allen Toussaint, who became a significant mentor, along with Dr. John, Sting, No Doubt, Jennifer Hudson, John Fogerty, and Joe Sample.
From 2014 to 2019, Falls served as lead vocalist for the renowned New Orleans funk band Galactic, touring coast to coast before departing to focus on her solo career. In 2013, director Lee Daniels hand-picked her to appear as a singer in his critically acclaimed film The Butler, starring Forest Whitaker and featuring Oprah Winfrey and Cuba Gooding Jr. As a solo artist, she released her debut album Me, Myself & Music in 2011, followed by Homegrown in 2017, which earned multiple nominations at OffBeat Magazine's Best of the Beat Awards and won her the Best Female Vocalist category.
Falls has continued winning that same OffBeat award in 2019, 2020, and 2023, alongside two Big Easy Awards from Gambit Weekly, including Best Emerging Artist in 2018 and Best Female Performer in 2019. Her latest album, Emotions, released in March 2024, delves into themes of love, frustration, anger, and release, delivered in her signature sound as Erica Falls & Vintage Soul. She remains a fixture at prestigious venues and festivals including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Essence Fest, and continues performing and recording as one of the city's most decorated soul vocalists.
