The SoulRebels

Formed: New Orleans, LA, 1991 — Active

The Soul Rebels are one of the most innovative brass bands to emerge from New Orleans — a group that has expanded the brass band tradition to incorporate hip-hop, funk, rock, and electronic music without losing the street-level energy at the style's core.

Rebels with a Brass Cause

The Soul Rebels formed in New Orleans in 1991, emerging from the same Tremé neighborhood brass band tradition that had produced the Dirty Dozen and Rebirth before them. From the start, they were interested in pushing the form — incorporating hip-hop beats, R&B vocals, and rock dynamics into the brass band format.

Their approach anticipated what would become a broader movement of fusion brass bands in New Orleans, demonstrating that the form was capacious enough to absorb a wide range of influences while maintaining its essential character. They became a festival favorite and a Frenchmen Street institution.

"We take the tradition and we move it forward. That's what New Orleans has always done."

— The Soul Rebels

The Soul Rebels have collaborated with a remarkable range of artists, from Wu-Tang Clan to Snarky Puppy, demonstrating the broad appeal of their concept. They have also been at the forefront of bringing New Orleans brass music to new audiences through extensive touring and savvy use of digital media.

They remain one of the most active and in-demand live acts in New Orleans, equally at home at a second-line parade and a major music festival. The Soul Rebels represent the living evolution of the brass band tradition.
