The Sons of Jazz Brass Band was started in 2008 by Michael Brooks and his son Michael Brooks Jr. — the grandson of the world-renowned Tuba Fats, a New Orleans treasure whose tuba anchored the city's brass band sound. That family lineage runs through everything the band plays.
The band performs around the city at wedding receptions, birthday celebrations, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and a host of other events, along with second lines and street parades — including the parade at the 12th Annual Danny Barker Banjo & Guitar Festival in March 2026. Many of the musicians also marched with the St. Augustine Marching 100, so the showmanship runs deep.
Their reputation rests on dependable, joyful playing and a pride in showing off the best of New Orleans. For party planners, festival bookers and anyone who wants a second line to remember, the Sons of Jazz are a direct line to the brass band tradition as it's lived on the streets today.
