Gov'tMajik

New Orleans, LA — Active

Gov't Majik is a New Orleans collective formed in 2005 and led by bassist Bru Bruser. Taking its name from Fela Kuti's lyrics, the band — self-billed as the “Dirty South Afro-Beat Arkestra” — infuses the spirit and rhythms of Afrobeat with the ethos of Crescent City funk and jazz, with a revolving cast that can swell to eleven players.

The Dirty South Afro-Beat Arkestra

Gov't Majik's mission is simple, in OffBeat's words: groove. But like Fela Kuti's, their motivation runs deeper — hope. At its core the band is built around Bru Bruser's bass, Eduardo Tozzatto's keys, Danny Abel's guitar and a dense percussion section, expanding to a full horn line (Kyle Cripps, Rex Gregory, Ricio Fruge, Steve Lands, Miles Lyons) and vocalists Cristen “Ten” Spencer and Giulia Coba for their biggest shows.

Their albums move from the mostly-instrumental, space-trance afrobeat of Party Favors (Future Family) through the dance-floor hypnosis of The Bass Age (2023, Future Family Records), with a new album, This Magic Feeling, on the way in 2026. Their annual Felabration — a full-concert tribute to Fela Kuti — has become a signature New Orleans event, drawing guests like Galactic's Stanton Moore on drums and trumpeter Aurelien Barnes.

Gov't Majik is a fixture on the city's biggest stages: Tipitina's Free Fridays, The Broadside, the Maple Leaf, the Hi Ho Lounge, and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (2024, and the Festival Stage in 2026). Where thought goes, energy flows — and on a Gov't Majik dance floor, the energy never stops.
