The Electrifying Crown Seekers are a gospel quartet from Marrero, Louisiana, pairing driving blues guitar with vocal harmonies in the tradition of the Blind Boys of Alabama and the Dixie Hummingbirds. WWOZ describes their sound as "garage rock gospel" — stomping, electric, and built to move a room.
Founded around 1965, the group has anchored the New Orleans gospel quartet scene for more than half a century. OffBeat's Jazz Fest 2012 guide called them 20-year festival veterans; they remain long-time fixtures of the Gospel Tent at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
For many years the group was led by blues-rock guitarist James Williams Sr., whose Jimmy Reed-style playing and high-range singing gave the quartet its signature edge. Williams died in April 2020, and the legacy continues with his extended family — including Stanley Williams — and other long-time members.
The Crown Seekers were the subject of the 2013 documentary By and By: New Orleans Gospel at the Crossroads, which followed the family group as it carried a decades-long ministry through a changing gospel landscape.
