To Be Continued

The To Be Continued Brass Band — TBC — came together in 2002, when a crew of young men from New Orleans' 7th and 9th Wards, classmates at Carver and Kennedy Senior High Schools, started playing on the corner of Bourbon and Canal with instruments held together by tape. Under the leadership of tuba man Brenard "Bunny" Adams, they turned street-corner gigs into a full-time band, working second lines, festivals, and clubs across the city.

Their break came in 2005, when they caught the attention of the Roots — Questlove and the band took the young players under their wing. Then Katrina scattered the band across the country, and their comeback became the subject of the documentary From the Mouthpiece on Back (2010), narrated by Kerry Washington with the Roots as co-executive producers. TBC's studio albums are Modern Times (2009, on Blue Train Production) and To Be Continued (2013).

The band's story also carries real loss: saxophonist Brandon Franklin was shot and killed in Hollygrove in May 2010. TBC has kept playing in his memory — collaborating with Dr. Michael White, Shamarr Allen, and others — and remains one of the signature young brass bands of the post-Katrina generation. (The site also has a page for HaSizzle with TBC Brass Band; this entry covers the band on its own.)
