Sean Schulich was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Woodstock, New York. He studied at Juilliard, the New England Conservatory and Tufts, and earned his master's degree from Yale. He won Artists International with a sold-out debut at Carnegie Hall, and co-founded the fusion group Alpha Mosaic, with whom he won the Sony Jazz Competition. His playing has been described by jazzreview.com as “staggering” and “audacious.”
He has performed with the Funky Meters, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the New Orleans Suspects, Bernie Worrell, Charles Neville, meshell ndegeocello, Zigaboo Modeliste and Matthew Garrison. His recordings include work with Haitian house-music icon Jephte Guillaume, who presented Sean's 12-inch vinyl release “The World is a Ghetto” (2017). His recent projects include Sunlight Origami, a genre-defying improvisational duo, and Big Easy Apple, a New York–New Orleans collaboration with Dirty Dozen Brass Band member Steve Walker.
He has played the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and in New York at the Blue Note, BAM, Brooklyn Bowl, the Bowery Ballroom and BB King's. He composed Promises Kept for the American Composers Forum's Recomposing America initiative. As an educator he was named a Philadelphia Orchestra Teaching Artist and has lectured at Middlebury College.
