Los Güiros blend the traditional folkloric rhythms of Colombia with the guitar-and-organ-driven stylings of Peruvian chicha and modern electronic elements, throwing a high-energy psychedelic cumbia dance party wherever they play. Bandleader Corina Hernandez fuses her love of Central and South American folk musics with contemporary instrumentation and effects to create the band’s unmistakable sound.
The lineup includes Simon Mouschabek on accordion and synth, Juan Coyote on guitar and electrified cuatro puertorriqueño, sousaphonist Todd Burdick (also of Tuba Skinny), Miguel Cruz on congas, Gabriel Case on timbales, and Howe Pearson on electronic drums. The band formed as the pandemic waned and quickly became one of the most recognizable acts in the local Latin scene, playing New Orleans dive bars, Bonnaroo, and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
Their first single, 'Cumbia Mezcal!,' arrived in July 2022, and a Threadhead Cultural Foundation grant is backing their long-awaited full-length debut. They hold a monthly cumbia dance party at the Saturn Bar in the 9th Ward and regularly appear at Fiesta Latina and the Audubon Zoo's Celebración Latina.
