Kumasi

New Orleans, LA — Active

Kumasi is New Orleans' own full Afrobeat orchestra — an award-winning big band that fell in love with the style Fela Kuti and Tony Allen created in 1970s Lagos and brought it home to Louisiana. Most of their live show is original music, written from West African concepts and built to make any crowd move.

New Orleans' Own Afrobeat Orchestra

Kumasi plays Fela and some 1970s afro-funk from Ghana and Benin, but the majority of their set is original: heavy rhythms, spontaneous improvisation, and an inclusive, participatory spirit that captures Afrobeat at its most infectious. They have won the Gambit's Best of the Big Easy award for Best World/Latin Music in 2017 and 2019.

The band has three LPs: Togetherness (2015), Akoben (2018) — their second release, issued on the UK's Soul Jazz Records and laced with call-and-response vocals — and Live at Marigny Studios (2021), their first live record, with four original compositions folding in rhythms from New Orleans and the wider Afro-diaspora, from Cuba and Haiti to Brazil.

Kumasi plays French Quarter Fest and Bayou Boogaloo and holds monthly gigs at venues across the city — the Blue Nile, the Broadside, Zony Mash — and threw a Lundi Gras Throwdown at BJ's Lounge in February 2026.
