About the Venue
Frenchmen Street's Two-Story Party
The Blue Nile opened on Frenchmen Street in the mid-1990s and quickly established itself as the strip's biggest room, with two floors of live music space and a rooftop that offers one of the better views on the street. Its size allows it to book acts that the smaller Frenchmen venues cannot accommodate, giving it a distinct role in the ecosystem.
The club has always had a strong connection to the city's funk and hip-hop scenes, booking acts that reflect the full diversity of contemporary New Orleans music rather than focusing exclusively on jazz and traditional styles. That openness has made it a gathering point for younger audiences and for musicians working in less traditionally represented genres.
"The Blue Nile understands that New Orleans music didn't stop evolving in 1965. They book like they know that."
— New Orleans musician
The rooftop space becomes particularly important during Jazz Fest season, when the Blue Nile runs late-night shows that extend the festival experience into the small hours. The club has hosted after-parties and special events that have become part of the festival's unofficial program.
The Blue Nile's willingness to program across genres — from traditional jazz to bounce to indie rock — reflects the actual breadth of New Orleans musical life. It is a venue that takes its role in the ecosystem seriously and books accordingly.
