Afternoons in the Square

The Jackson Square All Stars are a rotating group of accomplished New Orleans musicians drawn from some of the city's best brass bands — the Treme Brass Band, the Olympia Brass Band and the Paulin Brothers' Brass Band among them. Rather than a fixed lineup, the band is a fluid all-star pickup crew of young players and veterans who know the traditional book cold.

Their home turf is the streets in and around Jackson Square, where they can be heard on weekend afternoons playing brass-band music for the crowds. When the city ended the tradition of brass bands playing the first block of Bourbon Street near Canal, the All Stars kept the music on the street where the visitors gather — geared to tourists rather than the harder-edged style of the old Bourbon-and-Canal scene.

The name has traveled beyond the Square: they played the 2024 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival as the Jackson Square All Star Brass Band, and they're the subject of the 2020 documentary The Saints and Sinners of Jackson Square, produced by accordionist Michael Ward-Bergeman.
