Bryson Bernard, born October 10, 1982, in Lafayette, Louisiana, started singing in his church choir, encouraged by his pastor father. He initially enrolled at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on a full athletic scholarship in track and field, but left the team to form a singing group called Fasho, later renamed Fifth Element. After the group dissolved, Bernard pursued a solo career, performing at talent shows, weddings, and funerals. His five-octave vocal range earned him the nickname "Cupid" for a standout performance of 112's late-1990s hit "Cupid."
Cupid's recording career began with 2001's Are You Ready, followed by his 2003 self-titled album, which included regional hits like "Do Ya Thang" and a remix featuring New Orleans rapper Hotboy Ronald, blending smooth R&B with regional bounce. His 2005 project 2 Sides to Every Story merged classic soul with fresh energy. But it was 2007's "Cupid Shuffle" that made him a household name: the up-tempo line-dance anthem climbed to #68 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a genuine dance-floor phenomenon, spawning national television appearances on shows hosted by Dr. Oz, Steve Harvey, and Tom Joyner.
In 2008, Cupid broke the Guinness World Record for the largest line dance ever assembled, with over 17,000 people dancing the Cupid Shuffle simultaneously — a record that has never been surpassed. The song's reach carried him internationally, with performances in Dubai and Germany among many other stops. Cupid continues to tour with the Dance Party Express Band, bringing the same high-energy, crowd-moving sound that first put him on the map to audiences across the country and around the world.
