New Orleans-born pianist, singer, songwriter, and producer PJ Morton is one of the most musically versatile and commercially successful artists to come out of the city in a generation — a multi-Grammy winner who is simultaneously a member of Maroon 5, a solo R&B and gospel recording artist, and a committed advocate for New Orleans music and culture.
Biography
Morton grew up in New Orleans as the son of gospel bishop Paul S. Morton, absorbing both the gospel tradition and the city's secular musical culture before heading to Morehouse College and eventually to Los Angeles, where his career took off as a songwriter and producer for other artists. He joined Maroon 5 as keyboardist in 2010 and became a full member in 2012, while continuing to build his solo career. His Gumbo album (2017), recorded after he returned to New Orleans, earned two Grammy nominations; Paul (2019) won Best R&B Song for his duet with JoJo on 'Say So'; Gospel According to PJ (2020) won Best Gospel Album. Watch the Sun (2022) is widely considered his masterwork — a deep, personal album that earned widespread critical acclaim and confirmed his status as one of contemporary R&B's most important figures.
