The Maestro of Slide Guitar

Sonny Landreth was born in Mississippi but grew up in Louisiana, absorbing the unique blend of blues, zydeco, and Cajun music that defines the region's sound. He developed his signature slide guitar technique — playing behind the slide as well as in front of it — over years of practice and performance.

Before establishing his solo career, Landreth spent years performing with Clifton Chenier and other Louisiana musicians, grounding his playing in the Creole and zydeco traditions. He also worked as a session musician, contributing his distinctive guitar sound to recordings by John Hiatt, Eric Clapton, and others.

"Slide guitar lets you say things no other instrument can. It sings, it cries, it speaks."

— Sonny Landreth

His solo albums, beginning with Blues Attack (1981) and reaching a commercial and critical peak with Grant Street (1991) and South of I-10 (1995), established him as one of the great guitar voices in American music. Eric Clapton has called him 'the most underrated guitarist in the world.'

Landreth remains active, recording and touring with the same commitment to craft and feel that has always characterized his work. He is a beloved figure in the Louisiana music community and a standard-bearer for the state's unique contribution to American blues.
