Why We Love People Museum

Jeremy Phipps and Claire Givens met through a mutual friend and started writing songs together the same day, and that instant chemistry still defines People Museum a decade later. Phipps, a trombonist and producer, and Givens, a composer and singer, have built a genuinely novel sound — taking cues from afro-beat, hip-hop, choral, and marching band music and filtering it through synthesizer-heavy, progressive New Orleans underground production. The result has carried them onto stages with Thundercat, Big Freedia, and Hurray for the Riff Raff, on a North American tour supporting Tamino, and to sold-out, concept-driven shows at the Marigny Opera House and NOMA's Besthoff Sculpture Garden.

Pop Art From the Treme

People Museum is a pop-art, electronic band started by Jeremy Phipps and Claire Givens in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans in 2016. A mutual friend introduced the pair, and they began writing songs together on the day they met — an instant connection that became the foundation of the band. Phipps, a producer and trombonist, and Givens, a composer and singer, drew inspiration from afro-beat, hip-hop, choral, and marching band music to form a sound that combines the historic musical traditions of the city's past with the synthesizer-heavy, progressive underground of New Orleans.

The band performs live as a four-piece, joined by drummer and co-producer Mopodna and bassist Charles Lumar II, a touring member of Solange's live backing band. People Museum was named a member of the New Orleans Museum of Art's 2021–22 Creative Assembly Cohort, and the genre-bending group has shared stages with Thundercat, Big Freedia, Meridian Brothers, Maggie Koerner, and Hurray for the Riff Raff, as well as completing a North American tour supporting Belgian-Egyptian artist Tamino.

The band's Louise Bourgeois-inspired EP, Destruction of, Vol., further cemented their reputation as one of New Orleans' most engaging indie pop acts — a group capable of selling out venues like the Marigny Opera House and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art for concept-driven, immersive shows.
