LSD Clownsystem began as a wordplay joke among friends preparing for the New Orleans Community Printshop's annual Cover Band Show, a Downtown Halloween tradition. Tasked with picking a band to cover, one member named Karl floated the idea: "What if we called it LSD Clownsystem?" The group agreed it was a horrible idea — and launched the band anyway on Halloween 2018, dressing as clowns to cover LCD Soundsystem.
What started as a one-off joke quickly became one of New Orleans' most popular bands, drawing a genuine cult following as fans began dressing up like clowns themselves to attend sold-out shows. Members include bass guitarist Ricky Ostry, singer Howe Pea, and singer and percussionist Brooke Paulus, who together build imaginative set pieces and narratives for each performance. The band released an original song, "New Orleans, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down," in February 2023, and made their music available through the New Orleans Public Library's Crescent City Sounds collection.
In 2026, LSD Clownsystem made their French Quarter Fest debut on the Jack Daniels Stage, a milestone appearance for a band that started as a joke among friends. They continue to sell out legendary New Orleans venues, bringing their singular blend of dance-punk covers and circus theatrics to diverse crowds of party people across the city.
