Kat Walker is an artist and singer living in New Orleans. Inspired early on by seeing Ella Fitzgerald and Bobby McFerrin at the Seattle Folk Life Festival, she fronted the performance-art rock band Kat & The Rhythm Rats in Los Angeles — opening for Chuck E. Weiss at the Central (now the Viper Room) and playing the Whiskey A Go Go — before fronting a blues band in LA clubs.
In New Orleans, Walker has played the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, French Quarter Fest, Tipitina's, Temple Sinai, Parkway, and the Big Top. Her current band pairs her with pianist Amasa Miller, bassist Ricco, drummer Frank Wagner, and saxophonist Robert Rotherham. A longtime student of vocal technique, she has studied with jazz vocalist Cindy Scott.
Her 'Scat with Ms. Kat' family shows bring children on stage to scat sing and dance with the band — a regular at Jazz Fest's family programming — and her CD Jazz Skat Gumbo drew a favorable review from All About Jazz.
