Why We Love J & The Causeways

Every generation of New Orleans soul needs its torchbearers, and J & The Causeways are carrying theirs high. Jordan Anderson grew up on his grandmother’s backroom vinyl — Otis Redding, Al Green, Aretha Franklin — and you can hear that education in every note: the testifying vocals, the horn charts with something to say, the rhythm section that never lets the floor go cold. They’re a young band with an old soul’s instincts and a live show built for converting strangers into believers. As Anderson puts it, the goal is simple: “spread the value of love, the strength of vulnerability, and the power of connection.”

New-Aged Original Soul

New-aged original soul band J & The Causeways was founded on a hot summer night at the Maple Leaf Bar by singer, songwriter, and keyboardist Jordan Anderson. Anderson grew up in Leesville, a small town in Southwest Louisiana, where his grandmother — a piano teacher — kept a backroom record collection that changed his life: thumbing through the vinyl, he discovered Otis Redding, Al Green, Queen, and Aretha Franklin, and set out to find the power and emotion behind their voices.

Around him he built a juggernaut: a six-piece soul and R&B ensemble with a powerhouse rhythm section, wonderfully intricate horn and guitar melodies, and Anderson’s soaring lead vocals at the center. The band sculpted a robust, festival-ready sound and took it on the road — winning over crowds at Poboy Fest, Hogs for the Cause, French Quarter Fest, Acadia Music Fest, and SXSW, and sharing stages with The Revivalists, Sublime, George Porter Jr., Better Than Ezra, Marc Broussard, Flow Tribe, Cowboy Mouth, Dumpstaphunk, and Tab Benoit.

“It doesn’t matter if there are 10 people in the audience or a 1,000. It’s that sacrifice we make of our art, so that people can feel it that much harder the first time they hear you.”

— Jordan Anderson

On record, the story starts with the self-titled J & the Causeways EP (2019) — four tracks including “Supernatural” and “How’d We Get Here” — followed by Live at the Maple Leaf Bar (2019) and a Jam in the Van live-session EP (2022) featuring “Half a Man.” Then came the big step: the debut album Motions, released April 11, 2025, produced by famed musicians Robert Mercurio and Ben Ellman — both members of Galactic — at Studio in the Country and Esplanade Studios. A Live at Tipitina’s album followed in 2025.

When they’re not on the road, J & The Causeways regularly play the Maple Leaf Bar, the Ace Hotel, the Howlin’ Wolf, and the legendary Tipitina’s in their hometown — the same rooms where New Orleans soul has always been baptized. Catch them now; this is a band on the rise.
