Harmonouche

New Orleans, LA — Active

Harmonouche is a New Orleans Gypsy-trad-jazz band founded in 2010 by guitarist and harmonica player Raphaël Bas. The name fuses 'harmonious' and 'harmonica' with 'manouche' — the French word for Gypsy jazz — and the band is a rare thing: a non-blues band led by a harmonica player.

Harmonica Meets Manouche

The band's sound runs on jazz guitar, diatonic harmonica, singing, whistling, and even lip-trumpeting from Bas, with clarinet from Chris Kohl, multi-instrumentalist Pascal Valcasara on saxophone, piano, melodica, and cajon, Bart Ramsey on accordion and piano, and bass from Tim Paco and Nathan Lambertson. Their mix of Gypsy jazz, swing, musette waltz, Latin grooves, blues, and trad jazz is loaded with charisma and a healthy dose of humor.

Harmonouche has three albums — a debut on RRJB Music, Joli Songe (2014), and NolAmour (2016, RRJB Music) — with tracks featured on Putumayo's Vintage France and Paris Café compilations. They have lit up the French Quarter Festival, Jazz Fest, Satchmo Fest, and Festival International de Louisiane, and in 2014 Harmonouche was the featured band for French Quarter Festival promo campaigns citywide.

Bas still performs weekly in New Orleans and is deep into a fourth Harmonouche record, so expect new music — and the band's French-accented swing — on local stages and festival lineups.
