Happy Talk Band formed in New Orleans in 2001, anchored from the start by the songs of Luke Spurr Allen. His writing draws from traditional country and early rock, but the results are unmistakably downtown New Orleans: songs about barroom culture, failed romance, substance abuse, bank robbery, murder, religion, and family values, delivered with a dark humor that is simultaneously bleak and warm.
The band released Total Death Benefit in 2004 and There There in 2007, both recorded at Piety Street Recording. By There There the lineup had solidified around former Morning 40 Federation members including guitarist Bailey Smith, bassist Steve Calandra, and Alex McMurray on guitar. Hurricane Katrina brought its own chapter — Allen was one of the only musicians performing regularly in the emptied city in the fall of 2005, playing raw sets at the Circle Bar on Magazine Street.
Starve a Fever (2010) won the Gambit Big Easy Award for Best Roots-Rock Band for the second year running. Their most recent album, Low Shoulder, was released in 2021. Their traditional closing number — a punk shout-fest version of "You Are My Sunshine" — has become one of the more beloved rituals of the downtown live scene.
