Doug Garrison first built his reputation as a drummer working alongside bassist Rene Coman in Alex Chilton's band in the mid-1980s, developing a musical bond the two would carry forward for decades. He also recorded with Tav Falco's Panther Burns during this period, and appears on Charlie Rich's final recording, the jazz-influenced Pictures and Paintings.
Garrison joined The Iguanas in 1994 for the band's second album, Nuevo Boogaloo, replacing original drummer Willie Panker and reuniting with his old friend Coman in the process. The album included "Boom, Boom, Boom," which later appeared in an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street, and reached #34 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.
Garrison has remained the band's drummer through three decades of touring and recording since, weathering Hurricane Katrina alongside his bandmates and helping anchor a sound that moves fluidly between Tex-Mex conjunto, blues, and straight-ahead rock.
