Ambassador of Creole Jazz

Don Vappie grew up in New Orleans steeped in the city’s Creole musical culture, and he has spent his career as a performer, scholar, and teacher ensuring that the banjo and guitar traditions of early New Orleans jazz remain vital and visible. Drawing on the repertoire and styles of the 1920s and 1930s — the era of King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, and the city’s great string band tradition — Vappie performs with an authenticity that is scholarly without being academic and entertaining without being nostalgic.

As leader of Don Vappie & the Creole Jazz Serenaders, he has toured internationally, bringing New Orleans traditional jazz to audiences throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. His arrangements are meticulously researched yet performed with the spontaneity and swing that define the tradition; he understands that early jazz was not museum music but dance music and party music, and his performances reflect that understanding. His banjo work in particular — an instrument somewhat sidelined in contemporary jazz — is authoritative and joyful.

Vappie has also been an important educator, teaching at universities and jazz camps and working with organizations dedicated to New Orleans music preservation. He has collaborated with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and appears regularly at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. His recordings document a living tradition, not a reconstruction, and his commitment to the Creole jazz lineage — which is also his personal cultural heritage — gives his work a depth and authority that goes beyond mere repertoire.
