A Gonzales native, Douget arrived at the University of New Orleans and studied under Ed Petersen, taking mentorship from both Ellis Marsalis and Harold Battiste. He joined the Marsalis Quartet while still finishing his degree and took the gig on the road nationally; he has since recorded for a film soundtrack and performed with Nicholas Payton, Terence Blanchard, Allen Toussaint, Branford Marsalis, Dr. John, and Kermit Ruffins.
Primarily a tenor and soprano player with a clean, lyrical attack, Douget leads his own combos and works regularly with drummer Herlin Riley. He’s also one of the city’s committed educators: after Hurricane Katrina he spent time in New York, then came home to serve as Music Education Coordinator for the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music, where he’s helped train the next generation of New Orleans players. His bandleader album, Perpetual Motion, captures the bandstand side of his work.
You can still catch Douget where New Orleans jazz lives: on Snug Harbor’s stage, where he held down Friday nights with Marsalis for years, and around town — in September 2026 he was on the bandstand at the Bayou Bar with Herlin Riley’s Firm Roots. A working jazzman in the fullest sense: player, bandleader, and teacher.
