Hearing the World, Playing New Orleans

Dubbed “one of New Orleans' best jazz guitarists” by Gambit Weekly, Brian Seeger sits at the forefront of the city's music scene. His performance and recording credits include Aaron Neville, Stanton Moore, Nicholas Payton, Johnny Vidacovich, Cindy Scott, Brad Walker and the Organic Trio, among many others. His 1999 selection by New Orleans Magazine as one of their “Jazz All-Stars” — alongside Irving Mayfield, Davell Crawford and Ricky Sebastian — sums up his standing in the local community.

Seeger tours extensively with the Organic Trio, an international lineup with French organist Jean-Yves Jung and Luxembourg drummer Paul Wiltgen that reimagines the classic Hammond organ trio. Their albums Home Remembered (2013) and Saturn's Spell (2017) drew international attention for a sound that swings but reaches well beyond standard soul-jazz fare, rooted in blues, gospel and Americana.

Off the bandstand he is a sought-after producer and composer, with production credits including The Paislies' debut, Cindy Scott's Let the Devil Take Tomorrow and Historia, and Theresa Andersson's Vibes. His compositions appear on both Organic Trio albums as well as recordings by Stanton Moore, Quintology and Joe Krown.

He holds a Bachelor of Music, summa cum laude, from Berklee College of Music and a master's in Jazz Performance from the University of New Orleans. He currently holds the Coca-Cola Endowed Chair in Jazz Studies in UNO's jazz program, founded by Ellis Marsalis, has taught at Loyola University, and in 2019 launched Mining for Magic, an artist-development workshop for singers, with Cindy Scott and Karla Mundy.

Seeger has lived with low vision since childhood due to a genetic retinal condition — and he credits some of his hearing skills to the fact that he was never able to learn anything about playing by watching someone's hands.
