A New Kind of Funk, an Old Kind of Honor

Gerard “Bo Jr.” Dollis is the son of the late Big Chief Bo Dollis Sr. of The Wild Magnolias. He masked for the first time at the age of ten — his parents wanted him to wait a few more years, but after he cut up one of his mother's beaded purses and started sewing on his own, nobody could hold him back.

When his father died in 2015, Bo Jr. took the reins as Big Chief. He leads The Wild Magnolias the way he learned it: honoring his father's traditions while pushing the music toward modern funk.

Under his leadership the gang has released A New Kind of Funk (2013), My Name Is Bo (2021) — produced by Cyril Neville — and Chip Off the Old Block (2025), a record that brings together Mardi Gras Indian music, New Orleans funk and R&B, and Memphis soul.
