Ivan Neville grew up on Valence Street in the 13th Ward, the famed block where the entire Neville family lived. His father Aaron and Uncle Cyril first put instruments in his hands; his great-uncle Big Chief Jolly of the Wild Tchoupitoulas loomed large in his earliest musical memories. He formed his first band, The Renegades, at 17, and was already playing clavinet with the nascent Neville Brothers as a teenager. His birth name was Aaron Neville Jr. — his mother's parents persuaded her to change it to Ivan, unhappy with his father's wild reputation at the time.
In the early 1980s Neville left New Orleans and expanded his world, joining Bonnie Raitt's band as keyboardist for five years, playing on Rolling Stones sessions, and becoming a founding member of Keith Richards' touring group the X-Pensive Winos. His 1988 debut solo album, If My Ancestors Could See Me Now, yielded the hit "Not Just Another Girl" and announced him as a force independent of his family name. A second solo album, Thanks, followed, but his most sustained artistic statement came later.
At a solo set at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 2003, Neville convened a group of musicians — cousin Ian Neville on guitar, Tony Hall on bass, Nick Daniels on bass, and Raymond Weber on drums — and Dumpstaphunk was born. Grounded in two bass guitars, organ and clavinet, and three-part vocal harmonies, the band became one of New Orleans' premier live acts, opening for the Rolling Stones and Dave Matthews Band and releasing four acclaimed albums. In 2025, Neville was named the University of New Orleans Spring Commencement speaker and received an honorary degree.
Neville's playing synthesizes everything in his blood and his biography: the barrelhouse mambo of Professor Longhair, the spidery harmonics of James Booker, the cosmic funk of the Meters, the soulful grandeur of his father's voice — processed through decades of working with world-class musicians and refined into something entirely his own. As he has said: "Music is a way to make people feel better. It brings spiritual healing. I take my job very seriously."
