Amis du Teche is a young, lively Cajun band whose members grew up together along Bayou Teche in the Breaux Bridge area, just east of Lafayette. Fiddler and singer Adeline Miller leads the group; Amelia Powell plays guitar and sings in tight harmony, and Robert Miller holds the rhythm on upright bass. The band’s rule is to stay true to the heritage: they speak French between songs and sing only French lyrics of traditional Cajun tunes.
Miller has played fiddle since age five and studied French at Université Sainte-Anne in Nova Scotia and at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where she also plays in the Cajun, bluegrass, and string ensembles. Powell grew up steeped in the tradition — her father is Dirk Powell, her mother is Christine Balfa of Balfa Toujours and Bonsoir Catin, and her grandfather was Dewey Balfa of the Balfa Brothers. The lineup has evolved as the band’s footprint grew: a 2026 profile of the touring band names Cathryn Hanks (guitar, fiddle), Elise Riley (drums), and Ethan Moody (bass) alongside Miller.
Amis du Teche recorded the score for the Louisiana Public Broadcasting documentary “In the Blind,” was a hit at the 2024 SXSW conference in Austin, performed at the 2026 Folk Alliance International conference in New Orleans, and is part of the Louisiana Department of Tourism’s Musical Ambassador Program.
