Funk Forward

Guitarist and singer Blake Quick formed The Quickening in 2012 after leaving Flow Tribe, and the new band opened up into something more open and lyrical — funky and song-driven, with roots-rock and psychedelic shading. The band features a rhythm section built for the groove, with trombone adding punch to the arrangements.

OffBeat called the album Time Out “dense with well-produced effects, fine individual musicianship and sharp lyrics,” noting that “the funk-inclined will find plenty of ways to get lost in here.” The Quickening's sets move between originals like “Funk 2 U,” “Space Machine” and “Piedi Cazzo” and covers from the Radiators, Parliament and Black Sabbath songbooks.

The Quickening has played Tipitina's, the Maple Leaf Bar, the 2018 and 2019 French Quarter Festivals and the 2023 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, where Munck Music captured a live album.
