Formed in New Orleans, the Afrodiziac's Jazz took their own perspective on the music of Mulatu Astatke, other Ethiopian composers, and other African music, and juxtaposed it alongside jazz fusion, bebop, and a diverse array of each member's influences. Featuring tenor saxophone, baritone sax, trombone, keys, bass, and percussion, the band delivers intricate rhythms, bombastic horn lines, and tasty grooves tempered with jazz sensibilities and a focus on improvisation.
The band has multiplied its shows and collaborations since 2018, working with the likes of Tony Allen and Mike Dillon. A standout 2019 evening at the Marigny Opera House paired the band with vibraphonist and percussionist Mike Dillon for a show dedicated entirely to Ethiopian jazz and the composer Mulatu Astatke. Their album Immigration was released in May 2024.
The band has remained active through 2024 and 2025, multiplying shows and collaborations while releasing new music like the Immigration album. Catch them at clubs and special events around New Orleans, where they continue to develop their signature mix of Ethiopian melody and New Orleans groove.
