Smokin' on Some Brass is a brass, funk, and soul collective made up of some of New Orleans' most talented musicians, founded by jazz saxophonist Quay Frazier. The band has taken the New Orleans music scene by storm, producing a sound that incorporates three popular musical genres in a way the band itself describes as redefining contemporary brass band culture.
Frazier, a saxophonist, vocalist, and music producer, is a former teacher with the New Orleans Jazz Institute who received his Bachelor of Arts in History and Jazz Studies from the University of New Orleans. He is a member of Corey Henry and the Treme Funktet, with whom he has toured extensively, performing at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Brooklyn Bowl, and the Toronto Jazz Festival. Frazier is also a former member of Delfeayo Marsalis's Uptown Jazz Orchestra, where he performed weekly at the legendary Snug Harbor.
Founding member and lead trombonist Steven Sorscher brings an unusual background to the band: originally from New York, he started playing trombone as a child, later earning his CPA after a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Binghamton University and a Master of Science in Accounting from Baruch College. He moved to New Orleans in 2017 and now balances a full-time accounting career with his work in the band. Sorscher is also a member of City of Trees Brass Band and J.A.M. Brass Band, performs regularly with the Denver-based Brothers of Brass, plays the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival with the Caesar Brothers' Funk Box, and can often be found at Second Line parades with New Creations Brass Band. Trumpeter and composer Ricio Fruge rounds out the band's core lineup.
