Known throughout New Orleans as the King of Tremé, Shannon Powell is one of the city's most beloved and deeply rooted jazz drummers — a Tremé native who learned the tradition from the inside and has spent a lifetime transmitting it with joy and authority.
Biography
Powell grew up in the Tremé surrounded by brass bands and second lines, began playing drums at church at age six, and was taken under the wing of legendary banjoist Danny Barker while still in grade school. By fourteen he was playing professionally at Jazz Fest. He went on to tour with Harry Connick Jr., Wynton Marsalis, and Diana Krall, before returning to New Orleans where he leads his own groups and plays regularly with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. He is a living connection to the city's deepest musical traditions.
