Loyola's Jazz Man

John Mahoney is the retired Coordinator of Instrumental Music and Jazz Studies and Professor Emeritus in the College of Music and Media of Loyola University New Orleans. A native of northern New York, he came to Loyola in 1978 after earning his MM degree in Jazz and Contemporary Media from the Eastman School of Music.

In addition to decades of teaching, he remains an active performer on both trombone and piano. He appears as pianist — with both a composition and an arrangement of his own — on the Al Belletto Big Jazz Band's Louisiana Red Hot Records CD Jazznocracy, and is the trombonist on Matt Lemmler's Portrait of Wonder. Two CDs of his own big-band music followed: In From Somewhere (2001), featuring eighteen musicians from the New Orleans area, and Christmas Joy (2009), which showcases his arranging. The John Mahoney Big Band plays New Orleans jazz clubs and appeared at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 2017.

He is a different John entirely from John Mooney, the New Orleans blues guitarist who has his own page on this site. Mahoney is the trombonist-pianist, composer-arranger, and retired Loyola professor; Mooney is the bluesman.
