Editorial

Why We Love Higher Heights Reggae Band

Founded by keyboardist Cheryl McKay in 2000, Higher Heights spent its first decade on the road as a lead and premier backing band for the Bob Marley Festival tour, sharing bills with reggae royalty including Steel Pulse, Burning Spear, Yellowman, Eek-A-Mouse, and Culture. That kind of road seasoning shows in the band's New Orleans sets, which blend roots, rock, and reggae with Caribbean, soca, and dancehall flavors into something distinctly their own. Back home, they've become a genuine Frenchmen Street institution — a longtime resident act at Café Negril — and Jazz Fest has booked them on the Congo Square stage for more than twenty years running, a streak the band clearly doesn't take for granted.

Two Decades of Roots, Rock, Reggae

Higher Heights Reggae Band was founded in New Orleans in 2000 by keyboardist Cheryl McKay, and has been performing and touring the country ever since. The band's current lineup includes drummer Juan White, guitarist Mario GTO, bassist Olas, and lead vocalist Tiffany Cave, delivering a sound rooted in roots, rock, and reggae alongside Caribbean, soca, and dancehall influences.

For ten years, Higher Heights toured with the Bob Marley Festival as a lead and premier backing band, sharing stages with some of reggae's biggest names, including Steel Pulse, Yellowman, Eek-A-Mouse, Burning Spear, and Culture. In 2002, the band won OffBeat Magazine's award for Best New Emerging Artist, cementing their place in the city's music scene early in their run.

Higher Heights has become a staple of New Orleans nightlife, holding a longtime residency at Café Negril on Frenchmen Street, and appearing regularly at venues including the House of Blues, Howlin' Wolf, Tipitina's, and the Blue Nile. The band has also been a fixture of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival's Congo Square stage for more than twenty consecutive years, alongside regular appearances at French Quarter Fest.
