Editorial

Why We Love Chère Élise

Chère Élise flips the usual Cajun band lineup on its head: it's led not by an accordion player but by drummer Elise Riley, daughter of Steve Riley of Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys fame. Steve himself shows up in the lineup too, on accordion, alongside a genuinely stacked roster of Acadiana talent — Jamie Lynn Fontenot on guitar, Amelia Biere on fiddle, Sam Broussard on electric guitar, and Thomas David on bass, the last of whom also holds down the low end for the Pine Leaf Boys and C4. That kind of pedigree, wrapped around old-school Cajun dancehall rhythms stretching from the 1920s to today, is exactly why the band has become a fixture at festivals like Blackpot and Festival Acadiens et Creoles.

A Drummer Leading the Dance

Chère Élise is a Louisiana Cajun band led by drummer Elise Riley, an unusual arrangement in a genre where the accordion player almost always fronts the group. Riley is the daughter of Steve Riley, the accordionist and singer behind the internationally touring band Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys, and her father shows up in Chère Élise's own lineup on accordion — a genuine passing of the torch that also keeps him actively playing alongside the next generation.

The rest of the band draws from deep well of Acadiana talent: Jamie Lynn Fontenot on guitar, Amelia Biere on fiddle, Sam Broussard on electric guitar, and Thomas David on bass, who also plays with the Pine Leaf Boys, C4, and Low Maintenance. Together they blend old-school Cajun dancehall rhythms with material spanning the 1920s through today, keeping the tradition alive while bringing their own energy to the stage.

Based in Lafayette, Louisiana, Chère Élise has become a regular presence at festivals across the region, including the Blackpot Festival & Cook-Off, where the band has been billed as one of Cajun music's finest lineups working today.
