Raised in Maryland, Asher has performed across Europe and the US — from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and French Quarter Festival to the Montreux Jazz Festival, Jazz à Vienne and the Karlovy Vary Jazz Festival — and his compositions have been featured at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.
He holds an M.M. in jazz studies from the University of New Orleans and leads Skrontch Music, whose debut Lord, when you send the rain (Sinking City Records, 2019) reflects on the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and the development of New Orleans jazz. His Basher project released Doubles in 2022, called “unbearably beautiful” by Pitchfork Magazine.
A 2022 OneBeat Fellow of the US State Department, Asher has held composer residencies at MacDowell, A Studio in the Woods and Barn Arts, with work funded by the Doris Duke Foundation, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, South Arts, the Jazz and Heritage Foundation and the Threadhead Cultural Foundation.
