New Orleans (Bulbancha), LA — Active

Bogue Chitto — Choctaw for “big river” — is a bluegrass-country-funk band from Bulbancha (New Orleans), built around original songs by bandleader and banjoist John DePriest in styles from Hill Country blues and bluegrass to Louisiana French and country, all with a funky backbone.

Bluegrass Country Funk

Bandleader John DePriest, a Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma member raised in Mississippi, relocated to Bulbancha from Possum Town and formed the band with bassist Robert Matschiner, fiddler and studio engineer Mike Harvey, and vocalist and washboard player Carolyn Broussard.

Their self-titled EP (c. 2022) drew an OffBeat review for its story-centric originals — “Panola Blues,” “Louisiana Outdo,” “Churchill Downs” — plus an acoustic take on Allen Toussaint's “Working in the Coal Mine.” The band was nominated for OffBeat's Best Emerging Artist Award in 2022.

In fall 2023 they organized and performed at the first Bulbancha Bluegrass and Old Time Festival (repeated in 2024), and the band says it has recorded and plans to release a debut album in mid-2026.
