André Bohren grew up in a musical household in New Orleans. His father, the late singer-songwriter and guitarist Spencer Bohren, made the city his adopted home after a brush with New Orleans music on his way through with a circus family. André started on guitar at seven, added drums and piano by eleven, and by sixteen was performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue as featured soloist with the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra — while also winning awards at classical piano competitions.
In New Orleans, Bohren is best known as the founding drummer of Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes, one of the city’s most beloved funk-rock bands. He is simultaneously a serious classical pianist who performs in concert halls and on the street — literally, as a regular performer on the Piano on a Truck, a mobile piano that parks across the city. He plays guitar and sings in The Desert Nudes, a cowboy-harmony outfit, and holds down the drum chair for the psychedelic rockabilly outfit Rory Danger and the Danger Dangers.
